by Hossam Masri Wed Sep 26, 2012 9:07 amThat which was authenticated in the Sunan of Abu Dawood, those of Ibn Majah, and others, and classified as authentic by Al-Albani, may Allah have mercy on hi, from the Statement of Ibn Umar: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, would never leave off saying these words when morning and evening came: ‘O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well- being in this life and the next. O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in my religious and worldly affairs, my family and my wealth. O Allah, cover my weaknesses and set at ease my dismay. O Allah, preserve me from ahead of me, from behind, on my right and on my left, from above and I take refuge with You lest I be taken up from underneath me.’
Thus the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) started this magnificent supplication by asking Allah for pardon in this life and the next. Nothing surpasses receiving pardon from Allah. Those who receive pardon have truly received their portion of goodness in full.
In the Musnad and the Sunan of Al-Tirmidhi, and authenticated by Al-Albani (may Allah have mercy on him), Abu Bakr narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Ask Allah for pardon and wellbeing. Truly nobody can receive anything after certainty in faith better than wellbeing”. Pardon: is erasing sins and covering them. Well being is: Allah's protection from all trials and tribulations, by keeping evil away from the servant. Also, it includes protection from malicious evil and wrong doings.
Thus, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked for wellbeing in this life and the next, in religion and worldly affairs as well as family and wealth. As for seeking wellbeing in religion, it means seeking protection from anything that taints ones religion or brings it deficiencies. As for the worldly affairs, it means to seek prevention from anything that harms a servant in his life. This includes trials and tribulations, and any crises that can befall one in this life. As for seeking security in the next life, then it's because of the horror of the hereafter and intense hardship and different types of punishments. As for wellbeing in family, this includes them being safe from all troubling issues and trials. As for wealth then this includes: whatever may destroy it through it drowning, burning, been stolen or anything similar. Thus, he (peace and blessings be upon him) sought by this protection from Allah, protection from all distressful situations and harmful dangers.
And his statement: "O Allah, cover my weaknesses" i.e. my faults and shortcomings, all of which would displease me if they were exposed. This includes protection for ones’ physical privacy.
His statement: "set at ease my dismays", means: Bring me security and absence of fear. In this, is asking Allah to keep away all scary affairs, which can either cause sorrow or bring anxiety and depression. The invocation mentions dismays in the plural form, because their causes are many.
